1) What materials did you use? How did you interpret the theme? What inspired you?
I used the materials of pencil and colored pencil to draw/color my identity project. I also used a ruler to assist in creating the lines in my work and pictures to go off of. I interpreted the theme of identity by asking the question, "How do gender rolls influence a child's identity?" The clothes and toys depicted in my project portray the difference in traditionally feminine and masculine objects and how this choice is thrust upon children from a young age. I was inspired by personal experience with gender rolls and the increase in information regarding gender rolls and inequality in the media.
2) What do you want people to notice in your work?
I want people to notice the stark differences in the clothes/toys on the "girl" side and the "boy" side of the clothing racks in my work. Aside from the differences in color, the "girl" side of the clothing racks features toys revolving around appearance and household duties where as the "boy" side of the racks features toys with more involvement in engineering, building, and science. The decision that the child portrayed in my work must make, along with the phrases on both sides of the paper, are detrimental to their health. I want viewers to notice how unhappy and confused the child is by a seemingly pointless issue that our society has created.
3) How successful is your artwork? Explain.
My artwork is successful because I ended up with a finished work that is how I pictured it in planning. I think my artwork conveys the message that I wanted it to and turned out looking good. My artwork is also successful because I enjoyed creating it and care about the subject matter of this project.
